Hitoshi Iwaaki takes a late 20th century violence trigger and runs with it. I am of course talking about the immortal line uttered by thugs all over the world: what are you staring at?

The art is packed with irreverent humour, there are zombies shuffling around in the background all throughout. The characters all look like they were the product of a yakuza and a back-alley whore, in a word: not so pretty looking and with gigantic attitude stamped on their faces.

Homunculus should ideally have hit the seinen manga scene like The Matrix hit cinema. Both are about/products of the post-modern condition and have crazy effects while showing more possibilities of the medium they’re in. Whether you like it or not, Homunculus is definitely unlike any other manga out there, with great visuals and substance to boot.

Gunsmith Cats. The original Cowboy Bebop. Almost. There’s a jazzy OP with simple 70’s style split-screen graphics madness, bounty hunters, western sensibilities. The prototype for Shinichiro Watanabe’s version which maxed out everything this franchise has. Unfortunately it doesn’t have Watanabe.

Personant is like a manga written by Akito Takagi from another manga called Bakuman. It’s smart enough to stand out from shonen generics, yet simple-minded enough to appeal to a young demographic. In short, it has the makings of a successful manga.

Quality storytelling is what’s lacking in One Day, but it is nonetheless an interesting look into Benjamin’s earlier efforts.
